What safeguards
should be made when upgrading Rdb or DBMS?

International strongly recommends performing a full RMU/BACKUP (Rdb)
or DBO/BACKUP (DBMS) both
before and after the upgrade. It is also a good idea to save a copy of
the pre-conversion root file. This will allow you to recover the old
root file if something goes wrong during the RMU/CONVERT or
DBO/CONVERT command.
Note that once a database has been updated after the conversion,
this old root file should never be used to return to the prior
version.
Starting with Rdb 6.1 and DBMS 6.1 multiversioning is available. This should help to resolve some of the upgrade problems experienced in the past. With multiversioning, it is possible to run one version of Rdb or DBMS on one database while running a previous version on a different database on the same system. Note that you cannot run different versions of Rdb or DBMS against the same database – a database is converted to a specific version level. |
