SCI To Present at theConnect OpenVMS Boot Camp 2011Needham, Massachusetts
Connect, the HP business technology community, has chosen Software Concepts to present at the 2011 OpenVMS Boot Camp to be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Needham, Massachusetts, USA on September 18th - 22nd. Known in the industry as the leading provider of highly sophisticated IT system and database management solutions worldwide, SCI will be presenting the following five sessions:
Managing Rdb as if Your Life Depended On It If your life depended on an Rdb database, do you know how would you configure the environment?
Do you know, what would you do to monitor its health or what management techniques you would use to ensure its availability and performance?
While Oracle Rdb is known for its high availability, performance, and for being the “gold standard” for mission-critical environments, these benefits do not come “out of the box” nor are they automatic or guaranteed Poor design, configuration problems, operational management issues and/or neglect can lead to performance, reliability and availability problems -- and loss of data.
This session will discuss critical configuration, monitoring and
management topics that are essential to managing any mission-critical
Rdb database. We will provide "best practices" guide for managing Rdb
databases, including both what you MUST do -- as well as what NOT to do.
We will cover everything from the basics of file-placement and backup
strategies to more advanced topics like implementing a high-performance
Row Cache and Hot-Standby databases. While specific to Rdb, many of the
"best-practices" also apply to other database engines...If your Rdb data
is important, this session is a "must-attend". Presented by Bryan
Holland, President and founder of SCI. Rdb Migration to Integrity…lessons from the time machine Still running Rdb on Alpha…or a VAX? What’s holding you back from moving to Integrity?
Perhaps tachophobia (the fear of speed)? Perhaps a compulsive spending disorder (the need to spend excessively on supporting old hardware)?
…More likely, it’s the fear of change, limited downtime opportunities, or limited resources to investigate the “How do I get from here to Integrity”.
SCI has successfully migrated many, many Rdb databases to the Integrity platform – some from ancient versions of Rdb on ancient hardware…some across continents. In all cases, the move had to occur with minimal downtime and risk. This session will discuss several migration techniques used by SCI for moving Rdb to Integrity…and the lessons we learned. Whether you are running Rdb v4.3 on VAX or v7.2 on Alpha…moving to another node in your cluster…or moving between countries, this session will give you the knowledge that you need to decide which method is best for your environment. Presented by Bryan Holland, President and founder of SCI.
CIFS for Advanced Server Users So you want to allow secure File Sharing between your OpenVMS Server and other Operating Systems? Not to worry. For many years HP OpenVMS Servers have been able to participate in Windows Domains, but over the years the products and capabilities have changed.
PATHWORKS for OpenVMS and Advanced Server for OpenVMS (ASV) have been replaced on the Alpha and Integrity platforms with the HP OpenVMS Common Internet File System (CIFS) product based on Samba.
This session will explore the reasons for the change to CIFS, feature and functionality differences between ASV and CIFS, and the migration from ASV to CIFS. Migration topics will include the CIFS migration kit, migration of the SAM database, file shares, file security and hostmaps. This popular session from last year’s Bootcamp will be updated to include more information on using CIFS in an OpenVMS cluster, and various roles in Windows domains. Presented by Brad McCusker, formerly of HP's OpenVMS engineering group. Brad manages SCI's OpenVMS System Services business.
OpenVMS System Management for the 21st Century OpenVMS is an incredibly robust and rugged computing environment -- able to withstand many types of failures, allowing for continuous database and application access. However, failures can and do occur -- often the result of neglect or mismanagement.
Do you have “Peace of Mind” that your VMS systems are adequately maintained, and that you are able to prevent failures and efficiently recover should a failure occur?
OpenVMS is often running applications that are critical to the businesses they support. Yet, they are often only small part of their IT departments, often relegated to second tier status and lacking adequate staff and maintenance. Worse yet, they may have been left in a corner and nearly forgotten…until the application fails and disrupts business.
This session discusses proven methodologies and best practice for VMS system management that virtually eliminates downtime while maintaining exceptional performance – with minimal or no VMS knowledgeable staff. This popular session has been updated to provide more emphasis on real-world experiences that have caused outages or disruptions to production environments and updated with more discussion of how to avoid these costly events by:
All of which are part of the infrastructure necessary in the 21st century OpenVMS environment to insure continuous availability. Presented by Brad McCusker, formerly of HP's OpenVMS engineering group. Brad manages SCI's OpenVMS System Services business.
